Dominican Republic

Today we had the unexpected delight of a short walking tour through Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. What rich history!! I'm embarrassed to say "I had no idea!" It was great to learn more about this nation that we plan to serve with Ywam & homes of hope.

Highlights & pictures...

The Dominican Republic flag is the only flag with a bible on it.

The first catholic mass in the new world occurred here in January 6, 1494 when Columbus brought back a Priest with him. When Columbus died he considered his major accomplishment as the spreading of Christianity.

The first cathedral in new world was built here 1523 to 1540. Columbus was buried him this cathedral until 1992, 500 anniversary of the new world. Pope came here for celebration to move his bones to the Columbus Light House.

President & Bishop.

The first painting ever brought to Americas.

Sir Francis Drake was a pirate/hero from England that used the cathedral as his home. Notice the hand cut off the bishop. The bishop was holding a gold cross a d Drake took it with him when he left.

First University in Americas. It was Started by St. Thomas Aquinas.

Home of Christopher Columbus' son Diego. The 3rd floor was burned burned by Drake sO just two floors now. The home is a replica of one in Toledo Spain.

This city was walled and contains the main artery ricer to reach the island Columbus required all explorers to stop at the city to register in new world. If they did not stop then their discoveries & claims were not considered legal.
